I hope this is the right area to post in, Basically my computer wont allow me to defrag its pops up with a window that says

"Disk defragmenter has detected that chkdsk is sheduled to run the volume: (C: please run chkdsk /f."

I assume it started to think I'm using a CD or something to do it. The others in my house seem to think I'd have to reformat >_< hopefully you guys have a better solution. Thanks in advance

It's still covered as well as the Welcome to the Computer Forum! http://www.computerforum.com/70672-official-welcome-thread.html Just a reminder here to be sure to review the http://www.computerforum.com/52038-forum-rules.html

Most likely you simply have to restart the system in order for the scheduled run of the hard drive utility to be allowed to run for those several minutes depending the size of the drive itself. You can watch the progress since the percentage is shown on the blue screen there before Windows continues to load upon completion. The "/f" seen is a switch to make any errors found are repaired.

When a system sees a bad shutdown this will appear automatically when Windows first starts to load unless disabled. Once it finishes the scan of the drive and performs any drive informatio damaged it won't reappear on the next normal startup. When you turn the system off fast without using the normal shutdown method or hit the reset button when a program freezes up that is a hard shutdown. repair the boot sector = maybe/yes, reformat = no!

To disable chkdsk:
Copy blue text to notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager]
"AutoChkTimeOut"=dword:0000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager]
"BootExecute"=hex(7):61,00,75,00,74,00,6f,00,63,00,68,00,65,00,63,00,6b,00,20,\
00,61,00,75,00,74,00,6f,00,63,00,68,00,6b,00,20,00,2a,00,00,00,00,00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"SFCScan"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\cleanuppath]
@=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,\
00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,63,00,6c,00,\
65,00,61,00,6e,00,6d,00,67,00,72,00,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65,00,20,00,2f,00,44,\
00,20,00,25,00,63,00,00,00

In the Save as type: chose All files name it fix.reg > run it > accept.
Restart computer and try defrag.

!!Of course always before any changest to registry do the backup!!

Actually you can do that much faster by adding one DWord value by using the regedit command to enter the system registry at the Run prompt and follow the information seen here.
"

Open your registry and find or create the key below.
Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called "AutoChkTimeOut" and set it according to the value data below.
Exit your registry; you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect."

"System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager]
Value Name: AutoChkTimeOut
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: Time in Seconds or 0 to disable (default = 10)

The registry guide seen there covers from 95 and NT 4.0 upto XP for all kinds of things. The important thing to remember is spelled out in the disclaimer when making any changes in the registry. Don't goof up!
