Im pretty sure my disk drive has took a dump on me. Usually when you pop a CD in it pops up to install or the cd plays the song which ever i'm doing, But sometimes not, so i would usually go to My Computer and manually open the disk. Now when i put in a disk nothing happens, i here the fan come on like its getting ready to boot the install disk but nothing pops up nor do i see anything on the my computer screen. Any help?

When placing a disk in with data already on it wait a minute or two before trying to open an explorer window for browsing the drive to see if any disk information is displayed. If the drive is working that will be seen meaning you were trying too fast.

The popup for deciding what action to take for the type of disk in the drive when see can be set to never meaning the auto run wouldn't be seen. You can try right clicking on the effected drive while in MyComputer for the properties>recording tab to see that set as the default drive there. Otherwise... optical drive prices are lower these days!

that still didnt help, i know the computer is reading the disk so it cant be "not working" The fan speeds up rite after i put it in like alwayse but there is no indication on the My Computer screen that i ever put in a disk...? Im pretty upset because i need to update my antivirus and mom bought one from the store and now i cant install it. I've been running my PC with no antivirus for a Long time now! luckily vista has great security and asks me before anything intrudes my pc. I still want to be on the safe side and have norton though.

Norton is actually crap when compared to even free programs! For retail Trend Micro is one company that combines some good adware/spyware removers in along with internet securiy features. http://us.trendmicro.com/us/products/personal/antivirus-plus-anti-spyware/index.html

With nothing installed at this time a great free antivirus program is Grisoft's AVG 7.5 as well as their Antirootkit and antispyware tools as seen at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-spyware-free

Now toss those in along with Ad-Aware 2007, http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

and Spyware Terminator, http://www.spywareterminator.com/

which offers a mild form of firewall and you simply install those once downloaded to a folder. You won't need the UAC turned on with those on.

Your CD-ROM may be dying. You may need to go buy a new ones. (Cheap ones are only $20)

the disk is brand new. I dont care if norton is crap, It works fine along with the security of vista, i think i'm fine..

Suit yourself there as far as what antivirus program you use. Most will veer away from it however. The main concern would be seeing the drive replaced since it looks bad for the one you have there now. At least you won't be paying out a $100 or more on top of the current prices like those seen about 5-6yrs. ago!
