disk imaging- how much can they compress?

So instead of backing up my stuff to backup drives I was considering just burning it to re-writable blu ray discs.

But can I fit 1 tb of info to a blu ray?
I have no idea how much they compress info by..
And is it as reliable?
Cheers.

Never had a blue ray burner. I did check at newegg and seen 25 gig for single layer and 50 gig for dual layer blue ray disc. Text is about the only thing with any fair amount of compression. Don't compress. Its just something else to go wrong. For the record. I have two drives. I have thousands of video and family pictures and programs and utilities i use. I back up to one drive called backup. and backup to the 2nd drive called backup. I will not loose both drives the same day. I would not have two backups to the same drive for the same reason. If ya loose the drive its over. After this is set up i sync the drives and backup the same in both.

Im not sure about compression but dual layer Blu-Ray disks will hold 50gb. So 20 dual layer Blu-Ray disks would hold about the same as a 1tb drive.

I would just buy another 1tb drive and backup to it. Then put it back in the anti static bag and keep it in a safe place.

Looking around at prices of BR DL disks. I looks to be cheaper to backup to HDD as well.

I would use BlueRay disks to back up the most critical stuff that can't be replaced and get yourself an external 1TB HDD for the whole enchilada. Macrium Reflect would work to clone your drive to the external. http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

Mdisk is another thought if you want stuff to stay around for a 1000 years. LOL But only ceratin DVD drives can burn a Mdisk.
