Hello :) please can you help me?

I updated to Windows 8.1 last week and today I decided to install another hard drive but theres a problem somehow,
I have a 120Gb SSD installed and a 320Gb hard drive but all of my brothers and my games have filled them both up already, so I tried to install my 500GB hard drive that I used to use on this same computer when Windows 7 was installed, but for some reason Windows 8 is not detecting it.

It's plugged in properly with both the wires (power lead and the sata cable) and the BIOS is detecting the hard drive, but for some reason its not showing up under Disk management? I have installed a few hard drives before without any problems and I know that this is a working hard drive as I used it with Windows 7,

i'm not sure what to do? please can someone help as I really need to get this working, thanks so much :)

It's not something goofy like its scrolled off the viewable area is it? If the BIOS sees the drive windows should. Even if it's an unknown format it should still show up.

It's possible that you are using a motherboard that has 2 sata controllers and its possible that you don't have the driver installed for the second controller yet. Check your device manager for any entries requiring a driver. What motherboard do you have?

I was thinking maybe it was an unknown format too, but I didn't know that it could detect any format - I'm not really sure what else it could be, thanks for your help :)

MSI Z77A-G43 Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) is the motherboard :) thanks also I checked the device manager but cannot see any thing needing a driver? (No indicators) but it would show up next to it with a yellow indicator if it needs a driver from memory?

thanks again :)

OK, it seems it only has 1 sata controller. Are you sure this drive is good? Can you see if maybe another system detects the drive inside windows? Is there data on the drive or is it empty?

Yeah thanks it worked perfectly last week when I had Windows 7, so its strange how its not working now :( the only other computer I have is a laptop, would it be possible to test it on there? I formatted it last week so it should be empty, so i'm not sure what it could be?

thanks so much again for your help :) I have to go to bed now, but i'll be back online tomorrow :) I hope I can get it working somehow :)

Please take a screen shot of your Disk Management Screen.

If a blank partition is there, you need to right click on it and import foriegn disk or format it. If not, please uninstall and resinstall your SATA drivers.

Click Action at the top, then click rescan and see what happens.

Thanks :) I just tried rescanning but there's still nothing showing up, I tried it a few times as well as the refresh button without any luck, it's strange I am not sure what else I can do? thanks again :)

Do the following:

  1. Download and install this Intel Chipset Driver.
  2. Restart computer.
  3. Download all of the following to your desktop (don't install yet):

    Intel Management Engine Driver

    Intel Smart Connect Technology Driver

    Intel Rapid Start Technology Driver

    Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver

  4. Create a System Restore Point.
  5. Open Device Manager and Click on Disk Drives.
  6. Right Click on any HDD and select uninstall.
  7. Restart.
  8. Install each of the downloaded files above, Restarting after each install.
  9. Once finished and completed final restart, go here and scan you computer for updates. Install anything it detects.
  10. Restart.
  11. Run Windows Updates.

Do all of the above regardless of if it fixes it mid-way through.

Post results.
