Disk Read Error @ Boot

Hello all, I've searched the forums for awhile and got nothing of use yet, so i decided I'll ask :)

I just recently installed a Maxtor 300GB drive on my gaming computer, and I'm having an issue, installing windows, it boots with a disk read error. I know the disk is fine, cause i can detect it and move files around and whatnot with my LiveCD of Ubuntu Linux. I don't want to use linux though, i need Windows for my software i use. I used Darik's Boot and Nuke, and then installed windows, and still the same "disk read error". The files are transferred fine to the drive, but rebooting to install it, there's always an error.

Any ideas? Suggestions? The drive is almost new, just moved from a computer to another, must be only 3 months old. The previous owner(a good friend) had no problems with it.

First you need a Welcome to the Computer Forum! http://www.computerforum.com/70672-official-welcome-thread.html and the usual reminder to new members to review the http://www.computerforum.com/52038-forum-rules.html

Is the 300gb drive a sata or ide type drive? If sata you will probably need to prepare a driver floppy and use the F6 option when going to install XP. Vista seems to have it's own sata detection process eliminating the need for that. For XP the installer won't detect the drive when going to install Windows depending on the board. You will also need to go through the board's manual on bios settings for enabling sata there.

and if it's ide drive, did you correctly select master/slave???
and what filesystem are you using on the disk? are you sure there is a filesystem that windows can read???

It sounds more like the drive isn't set as the first in the boot order in the bios. If you only have the boot order set for cd rom with the installation disk removed as soon as the setup files are completely copied the board lacks a boot device. With a sata you have to make sure the onboard controllers are enabled. Refer to the board's manual for the proper settings.
