display distorted

Hi everyone, i searched the forum a bit and couldn't find the related thread, I hope someone can help me. One day when i went to start my PC the screen was showing the usual booting screens but with a pixelated column pattern distortion. Then on the next screen it would numbers and letters and some a checkered distortion pattern. Then after the black screen with the Windows logo two things happen, either the monitor would lose signal but the PC would stay powered on or the PC lose power completely. I can't get to the desktop.

i suspect the video card to be faulty but am not sure.

PC specs:
windows XP
1gb ram
2.8ghz processor

welcome to pc forum. we are your servents. lol .

ok just to make sure. had so many people just mis stuff. is your video plug fully pluged into the computer. if so, try a differnet monitor. if it still does not work, it is probily your video card.
