display resolution

i don't know if this is the right place, but how do i force the screen resolution in Xubuntu?

it is currently at 800x600. i would like it at 1024 by 7XX or 1240 by 1024

You don't want 1024x1024 unless you have a square monitor.

Anyways, doesn't it give the options in Display settings? If not, your graphcis card may not be supported, or it may be incorrectly configured.

How good are you at Linux? If possible, could you find your xorg.conf file and post the contents here?
