Divide bandwidth useage over network?

hey, i have 2 computers hooked up to my router. i have a fairly slow internet connection, 1mb/s download, 128kb/s upload. so when both of the computers are in use the internet slows down alot and jumps all over the place. is there some way to cap/limit bandwidth useage for each computer or something. like cap each computer to use half the available bandwidth? may be a crazy idea but it would be nice. (and please dont suggest faster connection)
 
If your router supports QoS (quality of service) you can allocate bandwidth per a machine or per an application to the whole network.

Refer to your router's user manual since each router is different.
 
QoS only really prioritizes certain types of connections and ports, though this is the cheapest and easiest way to get a boost. The only way i can think of to split the connection equally is to use another machine (running winserver2000/2003 or a linux distro) as a proxy/gateway for all your machines to connect through. This would probably need some amount of configuration and expenditure. :) probably not worth it lol

As others have said, about all you could really do is QoS through your router. I'd suggest looking to see if your router is compatible with DD-WRT. It has a pretty fair QoS system built in.
