DNS problem

A month and a half a go I got a second computer so I set up a router. For the first month everything was working fine and then when day it just stopped working. I thought it was the router so I took it back and got a new one and it still wouldn't work. When I run a internet connection check it tells me it can't find my dns.
I have done a ping test and I receive all pings sent.
I am able to connect to the internet through the modem but not the router. I have the same problem on both computers.
One is a vista and the other xp.

I was just wondering if anybody else has had this problem or knows how to fix it.

Try this

Alot of times, this will happen. its not common but not rare. If you can ping, then that means that your TCP/IP protocol is still working and your router is working fine. Obviously, you cant ping any external website without a good connection through the router. If you can ping through the router and the modem, but only get internet through the modem, and when using the router you get a cant find dns error. try this: ping yahoo.com. see if you get replies. if you do, you should see the IP of yahoo.com. go to your internet explorer and try go go to yahoo using the IP not the FQDN. you should get the internet to work. more then likely you are having a DNS mismatch with the Router and your ISP. Use your Modem only and go to OPENDNS.com. on the right hand side, you will see 2 IP's. Primary secondary. write them down. Plug your router back in. go to your TCP/IP settings of your NIC card and plug those IP's into your DNS settings. Reboot your computer. See if your internet now works.

When I try to ping yahoo.com it says that it can not reach that website

alrlight, well, you do have a DNS iissue. if you can ping IP's and get a service request, and you cant ping a FQDN then you have a DNS issue for sure.

alright, get on the modem and go to opendns.com. grab the list of DNS ip's that are on the right hand corner. plug those into your DNS settings of your TCP/IP settings, hook the router back up, reboot the comptuer, it should work
