DNS server?

For some reason my desktop won't connect to the internet. My laptop works fine on my wireless network. I did system recovery back a few days and it seemed to work....until I turned my desktop off and turned it back on again to find the same problem. "The DNS server isn't responding"

Suggestions?

Thanks!!

Do you have it set to obtain dns servers automatically or are you using google dns or another one?

Open a comman prompt and type ipconfig /all then hit enter and tell me what is listed for dns servers.

john - thanks for your response!!

Not sure if it's set to auto or google dns?

DNS servers listed:

192.168.1.1
192.168.0.1
68.94.156.1

The 192 numbers aren't valid dns servers. It should look like this.

I have comcast and those are their dns servers.

Can you post a screenshot of the window?

I am just going to throw a few things in, hopefully in the general direction John is going.

  1. Power cycle (different from reset) all equipment. Turn off all modems and routers and restart your desktop computer. Leave them off for 30 secs.
  2. If that fails - right click on the network icon in the notification tray and try letting Windows identify and resolve the issue. (this probably wont do anything but you never know...)
  3. If that fails - go to Elevated Command Prompt (type cmd in the search bar). In the command prompt window type: ipconfig /flushdns
  4. Restart and try getting to internet again.

If that doesn't work:

You have a Default Gateway, this should be the Router/Modem.

Go to Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.1 or if that doesnt work 192.168.0.1

This will bring up the modem Adinistration GUI where you can check and change settings.

I don't know your brand etc so you will have to follow user manual or similar to ensure that the settings are correct. Ensure your computer's IP address is the enabled list and has a reserved slot if possible.

Edit* I suggest you back up the router settings before doing anything. All have that function somewhere.

Bigfella - Thanks for the advice. I tried everything above w/ no luck. For some reason both the 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1 don't work. I've tried using internet explorer, firefox, and chrome...no luck.

dak1b,

I see in your command prompt that you have two dns servers from the routers. Do you happen to have two network cards into your computer and they're connected to each of the two routers?

Explain your network setup? Do you only have a modem and 1 router? Go into the tcp/ip settings for your network controller and click on properties.

Make sure that both the IP address and dns servers are both set to automatic.

John - Checked the tcp/ip settings...everything is set to automatic...I'm running 1 linksys cisco wireless router + dsl modem. AT&T internet service provider.

Yeah something isn't right because you have two different dns servers that look like two routers..as you know some routers have 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1,

Only thing I can think of is that you have the dsl/wireless modem that has a built-in dhcp server which gives out ip address and while you the other router is probably connected into the wan port of the dsl/wireless modem which also has a dhcp server..giving out ip address and that could cause problems

James - Ok. Not using a wireless modem.

I'm in 192.168.1.1 for linksys cisco settings...what should I do from here?

Thanks!!

dak1b,

Okay and you're connecting to the cisco linksys from where the laptop or desktop?

If from the laptop..then the internet is working for your laptop..so you must have one cable from your desktop connected to your cisco linksys right or is your desktop wireless too?

James - I'm connecting from my laptop. The internet works fine on the laptop. Yes, I have a cable connected to my cisco router to my desktop...
