Do forums have such technology?

Hello,

I'm new here and got a question straight away. :)

My boyfriend and I both visited a certain forum using different computers and different accounts (we had our own seperate board membership accounts there btw).

One day my boyfriend disagreed with some of the forum posters there, even the mods and admin got involved. I was the only one defending my bf and agreeing with him. Aside from that soap opera stuff, some technical weird things happened. The following day or so we both talked on the phone and decided to meet up in that forum so we can communicate via private messaging. After logging in, the pages wouldn't load up so I couldn't read the posts, pm him or log off. And he was experiencing the same thing. We had this problem for a couple of weeks with that board so we assumed the forum was having tech problems.

Later I realised that whenever I wasn't logged in but just browsing the forum as a guest, it was working perfectly. All the other hundreds of posters had been posting regularly all the time and no one reported a problem with the site that I could tell. I started to think that it was both of our user accounts who were only affected. I told him about this and he thought I was being a little paranoid, for how could a forum admin do this? We still couldn't use the forum and whenever we logged in the pages would never load up anymore.

We both decided to register under different new accounts to see if I was right.... and after logging into our new accounts the forum was working perfectly!!! Looking at our older accounts it doesn't tell anyone that we were banned or suspended, however the admin clearly didn't want us there. Why didn't they just ban us? because we've been posting there for some time and became senior members, and a few intelligent people liked us. To ban us for no reason at all would make the forum less popular.

Now could someone here tell me how this forum was able to bug both of our older accounts please? What technology can do this, to enable a forum admin to freeze a members account? The forum is powered by vBulletin so do they have the answers? Is any of this commonplace or would the admin had to have bought software to do it? Do forums have the ability to block/freeze an active members account?

They blocked your name, They did not like what you said. YES they have thats thy they ar called ADMINS! What did you leanr here? Dont piss off the ALL powerful. :) If you really think about it, it is their board, your a guest.. It doesnt really matter if everyone loved you both there.. Admins Decision

It would have been polite to send an email though, to say that they have been "blocked". Is that another way of saying they have been banned?

OSdragon yes they could've atleast sent an email, or even banned us totally. Its better than "blocking" our names like we're children. So far we learned that the admin was very rude and incapable of discussion. Troy, honestly I'm not depessed about it :D Its just as well really because who would want to hang out in a board that does this.

Depending on what you were discussin with the mods/admins, it might have been appropriate for you accounts to be banned/blocked. But this isn't really the issue, and since I don't know what the entire situation was, I am not gonna guess.

Being BF and GF on the same forum can be difficult, I know because both my girlfriend and I are a member of a few forums. people bitch at you all the time bcuz' they know you know eachother, and stuff like that. if you get into arguments, they will always try to argue with one of you and get the other involved. most of the time it's a lose/lsoe situation. i jsut try not to argue on forums anymore when i know my GF is reading too, cuz' sometimes she steps in and says something i KNOW iss going to get us in trouble, or visa versa.

The subject was about "should drugs be made legal". All the mods and admin said yes it should be, while my b/f disagreed. He explained that this could cause major problems in society, stating examples of youth addictions to hard drugs. They didn't understand what he was saying and accused him of "infinging on their freedoms to smoke pot" in the privacy of their homes. He never did this and so denied their accusation. He said that while some adults smoking dope can handle it and don't cause any bother, most people out there would only abuse it or get freaked out. Eventually it got out of hand, they misquoted him and made insults while he stayed calm and rational all along. I posted a few times but the tide turned on me. The admin didn't read what we were saying properly, he kept suggesting people like my b/f and I are wanting to control his life, when we were just putting forth the view that drugs shouldn't be freely available to kids and the public unless for medical reasons. This was when our accounts froze up and we couldn't use the board at all. Regardless of whether or not people agreed or disagreed with our opinions, blocking someone's account was an extremely childish act for an admin.

Sounds like a bad admin team to me, if they can't even distinguish between people's opinion's/first amendment right, and someone trying to impose there thoughts on you/force you to believe something. from what i read, it was jsut a debate, no one was trying to force them to believe anything, and blocking you was just a way for them to flex there admin powers a bit. leave the board...sounds like nothing but trouble.

I would have to agree that the best choice for you is to leave. You will probably only get into more trouble by staying.
