Do GTX 980 brands matter?

Do brands really matter when buying a graphics card? I've heard different things like MSI being faster and quieter etc, but is this really true or is it all down to personal preference?

Many of the cards have exactly the same PCB. Just refer to the cooling design, clock speeds and warranty in the context of price.

Some brands factory overclock their GPUs like EVGA and some MSI ones.

Some brands have better cooling, and some are quieter.

Honestly, performance usually is around the same

No its not. Performance in cooling is very different, thus allowing for higher overclocks and better performance.

If I had no interest in overclocking should I just go with my personal preference? At the moment I have an EVGA GTX 680 and it's been going great for 2 years.

My experience with the MSI GTX 980 gaming has been very good so I do recommend you that one since it offers very good cooling while it operates with very low noise. The price class of the card is pretty good as well.

EVGA has long been considered the "best" Nvidia card brand but it varies. MSI (my preference), Gigabyte, and Asus are typically reviewed the well. PNY and Zotac aren't as popular but still receive decent reviews. If you're not concerned about overclocking just find one that runs fairly cool and quiet. Also how it looks might play a factor. I love the way MSI cards have been looking as of late.

Also be sure to review each's warranty and RMA policy.
