so i need to know if i need a new psu, it's not for the computer in the my cig, it's my bro's computer(10 year old gamer lol) the specs are amd 64 3200(am2) 512ram, evga 7600GT, asrock AM2NF4G-SATA2 , 2 cdroms drives,4 fans, 250 gig hd, plus a neon. he has a 350 watt psu and i dont think thats enough for all the stuff i'm running, what do you think , will upgrading to a 400 or 500wtt make the performance any better.

You can easily go with a 450w, 480, 500w model as long as you choose a good brand. A 450w would be the bare minimum for that system. A good 500w or 550w model will leave room for later expansion.

Yes

Make sure that you go for solid power supplies from brands like Antec, Fortron, Enermax and the like. Definitely let us suggest some if you are not sure what to look out for.

JAN :D

When I finally install a SATA array here I'll moving up from the Antec TP II 480w to the TP II 550w still in the box. The additional drives will need the extra there. Enermax was the gamer's brand for some time. Fortron has had some good reviews lately. A good stable supply with enough and a little extra is a good solution for a working system.

no i know brands just not , i never buy cheapo stuff , i guess it's time to fork up some cash for a psu, would you say aroudn 70 90 bucks would be a price i should spend on a psu

i was looking at this psu http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=13609&vpn=OCZ52012U&manufacture=OCZ Technology
it's OCZ, same brand as his ram(not that it matters lol) but i dont know know if i should buy it
or this

If it's working properly and you don't have any lockups and crashes, then yes it has enough power and you don't need to replace it.

You'll know it if it's choking on you. Otherwise you can save your money, and then buy a better quality unit when it finally gives out.

thats wut i was thinking, but think my power supply might be on it's way out, the light on my cae and my neon will some timees fade and blink, and my computer will randomely shut off, it some unknown korean brand... i guess i 'll think about replacing it, i have a 400 watt generic pwsply, but i dont think i'll bother rplacing it, think getting another 512 stock of ram is more important

No, if it's showing signs of fatigue you should replace it. If it decides to go out with a bang, it could take other parts along with it. I've seen it happen more than once.

Unless your system is unstable right now, getting a new PSU wouldn't increase performance.

I would say yes get a 500w PSU just to be on the safe side.

There are lots of 500watts out there, and some are absolute junk.

Again depends, i'm pretty sure good solid 450watts won't be bare minimum for that system.

Both of those are overkill. And no, unless his videocard is lowering its clocks due to lack of power, you will not notice performance difference.

True... A phenomenal 350W PSU would probably do it, but where are you going to get one? A good 400W or so Antec TPII would do the trick.

This one would be great:
