Do I Have to Update BIOS?

Hi I got an old computer someone was throwing out (Dell Optiplex 755 SFF), and it had a bad hard drive so I purchased a new one. It had the baseline processor (1ghz single core Celeron) so I bought a new one that it supports (3ghz core 2 duo) and it had 512mb of ram. So now I need to know if I should boot it up with the old processor, install Windows on the new hard drive so I can update the BIOS, then put the new CPU in? Or would it be all right to put the new CPU in and go ahead and install Windows on the new hard drive? I have never changed a processor before so I have no idea what to do.

The easiest thing to do would be to put in the new processor and bootup. If its works and device manager correctly recognizes the processor, then you are good to go. If you it doesn't boot up or device manager doesn't properly recognize the processor then you know you have to update the bios after putting back in the old processor.

What specific CPUs? I am guessing you just rounded for the Celeron.

If it's an E series on the new one (sounds like an E8400) I probably would, if there was a newer version anyway. Some boards won't boot with newer CPUs than what is in the BIOS. I had that problem putting an Ivy Celeron (G1620) into a P8P67 Deluxe with an old BIOS, no POST. Once flashed, works fine.

Most of the time you shouldn't need to install windows and could use a bootable DOS USB disk or similar.

A21 should be the latest BIOS for the 755.

You can make a bootable thumb drive to load the BIOS outside of the OS. That would be the quickest/easiest method.
