Do I have to use 'DELL' memory chips in my Dell?

I need to buy some ram. Do I have to buy the expensive DELL brand sdram from Dell or can I go to my local BESTBUY and buy it for half the price?

If I can buy from best buy, does the speed of the memory chip that I am taking out of the notebook have to be the same as I am putting in? The bad ram chip is a PC2700. Will my computer ONLY work with PC2700?

You don't need to buy from Dell, just make sure the chips are compatible. You can use different speeds as long as they are compatible but the computer will run at the lowest of the two

Ok...so let me see if I understand. Any 200pin chip for laptop should work?

I looked at my owners manual and here are the specs......

Memory
Minimum requirement 266 MHz
Memory module connector two user-accessible DDR SDRAM
connectors
Memory module capacities 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, and 1 GB
Memory type 3.3-V DDR SDRAM
Standard memory 128 MB
Maximum memory 2 GB

Assuming the memory is DDR SDRAM then yes.
However, as with LaptopExtreme, I would definetly recommend getting another PC2700 because if you go lower than that it won't run as fast.
