when i put everything together for the first time, do i need a floppy drive or can i do it all off a dvd drive?

my board is an ASUS A8n SLI

What do you mean "put everything together for the first time"? If you mean installing Windows, all you should need is a dvd-drive, to read the installation disk. You may need a floppy for SATA drivers if installing a SATA hard drive, but I believe that is not nessecary with this board, who's bios displays SATA drives as IDE drives.

i mean, to update to BIOS. after reading some more i've found a better way to ask the question. once im done puting the computer together, turn it on for the first time, i shouldn't need a floppy for that, right? even if i update the BIOS, i can just DL it from ASUS from an old machine, burn it to a cd, and then flash the BIOS of the new machine off the cd, right? (the reason i ask is because the manual keeps saying floppy - i don't have one, nor do i want one)

You don't need one. If you know the procedure for your BIOS update, it'd only be a case of creating a bootable cd with a burner (cd or dvd), and adding whatever files you need to that. I have always updated bios's within windows, so if you're not well versed it may be worth getting someone else's input before you try it. :)

Edit: You seem to be under the impression that you need to update the bios just for the pc to work. That shouldn't be the case. Any generic bios version should be compatible with the hardware you plug into it, perhaps with the exception of SATAII Maxtor hard drives, I have heard they don't go well with nForce4 boards without firmware updates.
