Do I need a modem?

I live in an apartment with Internet provided. I plug my Ethernet cable into the wall them my laptop to connect to the Internet. To go wireless do I need a modem or just a router?
 
You would need a router. You may have to fiddle with the router settings though to make it play nice with the hotel's router.

Hey may need a router, as his room already has an ethernet connection the apartment building already has a router or server providing DHCP, so a simple wireless access point could be all he needs, it just depends on the setup of the network.
