Do I need to install RAID even if I don't need it?

My MB(kt 880) is RAID capable but it's not installed. whenever I hook my HD and CD to different channels my computer runs sluggish through POST and getting to the windows boot screen. after that it seems OK. sometimes my HD isn't detected. I've run a few programs and drive is said to be OK

when both HD and CD are on the same channel the POST goes real fast and the computer says 'can't find NTLDR press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot'. then it seems after that my HD is corrupt and has to be reformatted to reinstall Windows.

BIOS doesn't list any way to turn RAID on/off. it does list four channels since the MB does have SATA. I am able to disable the SATA since I'm not using it.

MB manual shows a pic of RAID BIOS and says to hit TAB key to get into it. The only BIOS I see is my main BIOS, nothing comes up before it. since I don't have RAID installed should the board act like a normal two channel IDE?

Your motherboard may only support RAID for SATA drives... and with the SATA option off in BIOS, that may be why you don't see the RAID setup.

ok, but if use the normal IDE channels it acts sluggish if I only have on device per channel. if I have two devices on each channel the computer acts and runs fine.

Just wanted to make sure that the board wasn't preset to use RAID only.

RAID isn't an option anyway, not with an optical drive and a hard drive. Check your jumper settings on both devices. Make sure they're set to "single" or "master".

Try defining each device in BIOS.

Primary Master = Hard Drive
Primary Slave = Not Installed
Secondary Master = Optical Drive
Secondary Slave = Not Installed

The BIOS won't let the drives be anything but slave without the jumpers installed. I'm beginning to think that the board is designed to run in either IDE RAID ro serial RAID. I'm on the manufacture's chat forum asking the same questions. I will let you know if they come up with something that works.

in the mean time, thanks for the help and keep the idea's coming.

What do you mean without the jumpers installed? I'm beginning to think this is a jumper issue. Are you absolutely 100% sure both drives are set to "master" or "single"? Besides, RAID is an added option, not a required feature.

If you just set the jumpers to cable select then you neednt worry about amster/slave/single crap. It figurse it out all by itself
