Do I Need To Pay For A Backup ?

I pay 125 a year for online backup just in case. I use my computer for email, web surf and little else, maybe a few Google Docs. Anyway I bought a cheap laptop and was able to get everything on it that was on my desktop by just downloading Chrome, making me think the stuff had to be in the cloud ??? Do I need to pay for this backup service ?? Thank You
