Do I really need a new case?

I'm getting a new computer, I was just wandering if I could still use my five year old case. I'm not trying to be cheap, it just might not be necessary for me to get another one!, ok I am trying to be cheap :D

It only has one external cd/dvd drive slot, but why does everyone seem to need more than one anyway? I was wandering about that for a while, and what the hell is an internal drive?

Cheers, Blue.

New cases are pretty cheap nowadays, you could get one for 50 or 30 bucks with a psu in them. Your new computer, motherboard, will determine the type of case you need. Like an atx mother board needs a atx compatible case to fit in. An external drive is something you connect outside of the case via a wire/cable, while an internal drive is kept in the case and connected directly to the m/b. Most internal drives will run faster than external ones do. In the case there is usualy a chamber up front for securing your HD and other internal drives. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

i wouldnt personally use that psu though.

internal drives are hard drives basically. and people need more than one if thye have more than one cd/dvd drive. for example i have a dvd writer and a dvd rom drive. if you install a game, instead of swapping cds i can just put 1 in rach and let it do it all by itself.

Ok, so will I be able to choose whether I want to connect the new hard drive im getting internally or externally?

So if I connect it externally then it won't work as fast?

I was going to get an ahtlon 64 processor, i'm not sure if this and all the other stuiff would be compatable with my old case though.

Depends on the type of HD you have. Most are internal, some are external, connected via usb or serial port, mainly for storing data avaliable on the go. Most all computers have an internal HD, its not much of a computer without one. Your internal HD will connect via an IDE cable.

I think that the case has to be ATX for it to support an Athlon 64 ;)

Well I just had a look at some external har drives, and they all seem to have a small buffer memory and are more expensive, so i'm going to get an internal one.

My old case was made for a pentium 3 700 mhz. Even if new cases are cheap, I might as well keep my old one if I can. I don't know if the athlon 64 3500 with a 939 scoket motherboard would fit though. I guess it's hard for you to know if my case is compatable, you'd have to see ho much space was inside it and stuff.

Well thanks.

edit: Just saw above post, and I also realized mt computer only supports one internal hard drive and I bet there would be a whole lot of other compatability problems that i don't realize.

Thanks for the help guys!

The main thing is your new m/b. If your going with AMD 64, you will need an atx case, so you just need to find out what type of case you currently have. Most of the things in your case wont work with a new computer running an amd, except possibly your ram and/or HD.

its a high % of cases that are atx compatible, so you may get lucky. If not they are dirt cheap, as has been discussed

I shall indeed verify that it has to be ATX to be compatible with an Athlon 64
You can get mATX boards for an Athlon 64, and from the fact that your case only has one 5.25" slot and one internal 3.5" slot would lead me to believe that your case is for mATX boards. I would suggest just getting a new ATX case and mobo, that way you won't have to worry about anything (especially the PSU which can be a pain for mATX cases).
