When I run Linux 2.6 w/ the KDE, my 256 MB is plenty enough w/o a swap file.

It's my damn Windows XP that uses 300 MB+ and creates that evil Win386.swp

Why would you disable swap with only 512MB of ram?? My PF is at 527MB, and i have 1GB of ram.

i only disable it if i have 2+gb ram, the other pc that has 1gb ram i still use virtual mem for those.

I can understand that, but why would you disable it if you only have 512MB?

nope. i just don't run very memory intensive progs. i have only seen "out of physical memory" once. i am runnin xp.

palmmann and motoxrdude, why dont you use virtual memory? Im not saying that you should or shouldnt, i just want to know why you disabled it.

My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Performance Settings > Change Virtual Memory

Virtual RAM helps out alot if you dont have much physical RAM.

i have to use virtual memory cause my page file is at 435 right now and i am using half of my ram and thats with just having internet explorer on. but i do have 62 processes going right now in the background so maybe thats why i am using so much ram.

I assume saving my physical RAM for games, where it really matters. And use my PF for programs that dont require as quick access to the memory.

I don't run virtual memory on my laptop, even with only 512M because I honestly don't need it! If I ever actually run out of RAM, I'll enable it, but I have yet to... I mean I'm only using 200M right now with Trillian, Firefox, and two occurances of Open Office running.

1 GB of RAM, 2 GB fixed swapfile/virtual memory. Even during heavy editing of graphics or music files, I've yet to run out of space. Works great for me.
