Do you guys think the Phenom II will be better than i7?

With Phenom II shortly on the way, do you guys think that AMD will take the crown back as processor champions?

No it can't. The Phenom II is right between the q9400 and 9550, which is good for where it's priced. The X4 920 is $235 and the X4 940 is $275 on newegg. Which is a great deal considering you don't have to build an entire new system for it like Intel is doing with the Core i7.

Nope.

Overall i think a Phenom II system would be better from a bang from your buck perspective since the new Phenom IIs are a lot cheaper then the i7s and use DDR2 instead of DDR3.

Nope.

Yeah that's true, but then again probably 1-3 years down the road DDR3 will be the standard RAM instead of DDR2, so people will have to upgrade.

ddr3 is already getting considerably cheaper, i found and issue of cpu from febuary of 2008, 2 gigs of ddr3 cost 600 bucks, now look at what 6 gigs will cost you :P

The AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition just outclasses the Q6600 (which is about 2yo) at clock speeds but is thrashed by it by overclocking and cannot like most AMDs match their counterparts at overclocking

What? The Phenom II overclocks very well compared to Intel. If it beats the Q9400 than it shouldn't have a problem with the aging Q6600.

just going by this

quote "Previous Phenoms ran so hot that you’d be lucky to increase their clock frequency by more than a few hundred megahertz. However, thanks to its die shrink to 45nm, Phenom II runs much cooler and is therefore far more overclockable.

While our old Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition could only be overclocked from 2.5GHz to 2.8GHz, we could overclock the Phenom II from 3GHz to 3.6GHz. This entailed increasing the CPU multiplier from 15 to 18, and boosting the vcore from 1.336V to 1.45V. This is a fairly small overvolt, but with any more voltage applied, the system wouldn’t POST.

At these settings, the CPC Media Benchmarks score for the Phenom II increased from a mediocre 1,135 to a respectable 1,306. In contrast, the overclocked Phenom scored a dire 999 overall. The G0 stepping of the Q6600 that we tested has a justified reputation for being an excellent overclocker, and we pushed it up from 2.4GHz to 3.6GHz.

At this frequency, its overall Media Benchmarks score rose from 1,038 to 1,478. The overclocked Q6600 also took the lead back from the Phenom II in Cinebench R10 and Folding@home, although it still lagged behind in wPrime 32M. In Crysis, the overclocked Q6600 once again reigned supreme with a faster average frame rate.

However, the Q6600 consumes a lot more power than the Phenom II when overclocked. Its 65nm transistors need a lot of extra voltage to run stably at 3.6GHz, so the overall power consumption of a PC with an overclocked Q6600 is higher than a system with an overclocked Phenom II."
