Do you need to install a network card/Wi-Fi dongle on a host PC or do you also need

To connect to a wireless access point you need a Wi-Fi adapter, to connect to a router/switch you need a wired network card.

Access point if it is acting as a broadcasting device (Connected wired to the router/switch) you need wireless adapter to get connected to the wireless network. If the Access point is acting as a receiver (Connected wired to the computer to receive an existing wireless router's wireless signal) you doesnt need wireless adapter. In the 2nd case your access point will act as your wireless card which will receive wireless signals and transmits to the computer through the ethernet cable.
