Do something you enjoy, me I love cars, sports, and music. If I had to choose I would start a really good baseball forum, because I cant find one that I like, but that is me. Something like photography, cars, animals things like that will actract people, but it also goes by advertising as well. The other forum I visit like crazy is newtiburon.com, because I have a Tiburon and the people on there are really cool.

well its not neccasarily looks.... people go to knewledge and to topics they like, i dunno about other people but i likee the darker type forums. what is going to be on this forum?

If your into gaming yourself, then make a gaming forum, the internet is filled with gamers. I would sign up myself ) I love to join smaller growing forums. IMO they are more fun then Larger forums.

Pick a subject you are knowledgeable in; don't specialize too much, or you will limit the market.

Make sure you have a good set of rules, a couple dedicated, decent moderators, and learn a little SEO for marketing through the search engines.

If it does turn out to be a forum where you entrust people with responsibility and keeping things up to date and all that, I can't stress communication. Especially from the higher end of the spectrum (owner, admin, etc.) I've abandoned staffing forums before, because there was no communication. Owner left, or Admin just dissapeared...I had no idea what to do...it wasn't my site. A month later everything is back to normal and everyone has returned. But will I go back? No, because I can only expect it to happen again. After the site's re-birth, not a single e-mail as to what happened or to even notify me all was well...I can only assume they don't care and got a new Admin.

So, in brief, if you take care of your staff...they will take care of you.

EDIT: 5,000th post. Oh yah!

alot of the time its more down to marketing than anythign else, you can have the best forum subject in the world which everyone loves and would pay thousands of dollars to see, but if they dont know it exists then your opretty screwed.

This is from personal experience, dont sit back and let people come to you, make it work, and dont stop making it work, contact other sites, set up affiliate programs with them, get some banners made to advertise on other sites with. Dont just sit there and expect it to happen, i suggest google adsense aswell, it will not only give you a little portal to view related sites and perhaps advertise on them, it will also generate you some cash, which can be used to recooperate server runnign costs....
