Hey guys,

who uses Readyboost in Vista or Windows 7 here?

I purchased a 4gb usb flash drive and thought i would try it out.....ive noticed with it enabled things load quite a bit faster on my Q6600 rig with 4gb of ram + the 4gb readyboost!

But im not going to use it for that,Im gonna use it for my Netbook,should help out alot.
 
I used it for a long time with my laptop. It would increase the speed...I could really tell a difference. I just upgraded to 4GB PNY RAM in the lappy...now I think it slows it down! I will not use it again after the upgrade.
 
I don't use it. I think it's a gimmick since my hard drive has an average write speed of 40-45MBps, while my flash drive would be lucky to get above 10MBps.
 
3GB in my laptop with a fresh install of Vista Business. Never tried it personally. Maybe if I can find an SD card that's compatible I'll try it. I carry the laptop around too much to deal with a flash drive sticking out of it :P

I was reading up on it last night cause this thread sparked an interest. Apparently most Flash disk do one type of reading/writing way faster than HDD, but they lack a large file speed or something that HDD have... So windows only uses Readyboost for smaller files within the speed range...

I have plenty of ram in all my comps...so no, no ready boost.

From what I gather it has nothing to do with RAM.. only HDD??? But I could be wrong.

I know, I can imagine me carrying around my EEE with a flash drive constantly plugged in :P

Bingo, the access time on your flash drive must be about 1 to 3 ms for it to even make a difference. If it is not that fast it will create a bottle neck, hard drives read/write faster than that and especially if it is from the HD cache.
 
Basically readyboost is like superfetch/prefetch on steroids, as flash memory has super low seek times. I personally used it on my laptop, but on my desktop with two hard drives in raid and average read speeds of >200mb/s it seems slower than without readyboost.

I could be wrong but i dont think it has to be empty because when i inserted my flash it asked if i wanted to dedicate the whole drive to Readyboost or not and gives you other options to enter a size/amount of space you would like readyboost to use in the drive.

I dedicated mine.

Yeah, you can set just a portion of the drive to be readyboosted(is that a word?XD)
 
I don't use readyboost. I have 3 gb in my laptop (vista) and 4 gb in my desktop (7) and they both run very fast.

I also heard from a friend that all flash memory has a limited amount of reads and writes. This concerned him because he figured using flash memory as page file would use those up very quickly.

Flash memory reads quicker in general but writes A LOT slower. Like I said, most basic usage ready boost is not needed. If you have over 4 gigs of RAM and a decent HD it is already faster than ready boost. The only time it would come in handy if is your RAM is maxed and your HD cache is maxed and if that happens, you built the wrong PC for your needs.
 
Hi I used ready boost for the first time and it definately makes a diiference that I noticed. I have 870mb on ready boost. Without it when I play Grand theft auto 4 the game runs in slow motion. With it it runs almost perfectly.
I dont know if its worth it for computers that dont have problems handling software though. I probably wont continue using once I get my upgrades.
 
i have 4gb of readybost running, and i get .2fps pretty, lol jk haha no increase, i have 2gigs running it got me a 60 points less with it...but i still use it just for the heck of it...
 
Nope....have better uses for my flash drives...like holding format files and private and files I don't want to lose.

Readyboost only helps if you have less then 1GB of ram and running Vista. After that its very little of a boost.
