Does a Clicking HDD Mean It's Toast?

I've got a Samsung 1TB Spinpoint Laptop drive that my friend said is clicking whenever he turns his computer on. I pulled the drive am about to toss it in mine to see if I can get it fixed.

This drive has had problems in the past but I don't think it's gotten to clicking yet. Any ideas on what to do? Time to make it a new coaster?

Yep, as John said, its toast, but if you can get any data off it now, do it straight away. Then while it still runs, boot n' nuke it, then bin it.

Well I've got it hooked up to my computer and it seems to be working fine. I'm running Seatools on it now.

Also, I've got it sitting upright instead of flat in my computer. Might be making a difference?

Hehe if the HDD dies before that,he can always use good old hammer to destroy the data. :D

As others have said...backup all the data from it FIRST and THEN play with as much as you want!

He's got everything he needs off of it so I'm free to do with it as I please. It's actually my drive anyway that I gave to him since his 250GB drive was slow and full. He's using that one again for now.

Then tell him he broke your Drive and make him buy you a new one:) Seriously though, it's done - only a matter of time. Use it while it lasts, but don't put anything on there you aren't willing to potentially immediately lose.

Payback time! :D

If it's clicking you may as well throw it out now since it's just going to die anyway.

Well I pulled it from a different laptop a while back and it wasn't mine then. I built his desktop at the time so he just said I could keep the hard drive as payment which was fine with me. I don't really care about having it.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

Didn't even think of that. I don't have the receipt or anything for it, just the drive.

All you do is go to Seagate's website and stick the serial number in the RMA checker. You don't need a receipt because it's tied to manufacture date and serial number.

Thanks. I'll check that out when I get home. I think it's only a year or maybe two old.

Either way, if it does die, you want all the info destroyed, because the platters will still be readable, even thought the read head assembly is stuffed.

Nobody will have an interest in anything on that drive. But I'll smash it with a hammer to be safe.
