I would think it is close to the same as XP not sure because i never messed with vista
control panel> network connections> Local area connections> tcp/ip properties

thnx dude, buts it a little different in vista, i got help frm here:

anyway, do u why, when i change the address, other computers in the network have the same ip adress...
coz it comes up with an error message saying 'another computer has the same ip adress as you, it may cause conflict... etc etc'

how would i make each comp have a different ip??
 
in your router setup, set the starting DHCP ip addresses higher then one you are using for the static ip that way the router cant assign that ip to any systems.

for instance set your static ip to 192.168.1.101 and in your router setup set the starting ip address at 192.168.1.102
