Does Battery Charge When Laptop is in Use?

I recently got my first laptop (used) and I'm not sure when the battery is being charged. If I leave the battery in all the time, does it charge when I have the laptop plugged in AND in use, or does it only charge when its plugged in BUT turned off? If it charges when plugged in AND in use, can it be over-charging...or is that even something to worry about?
 
Most of the time with any rehargable battery it will trickle charge when sitting idle. WHen you are using the unit while having an ac adapter plugged in you probably wouldn't see much of a charge since you are drawing power from that. But nothing is using battery power there. Constantly charging some batteries will see them overheated at times. Most of the time the battery is electrically isolated while a laptop is in use.
 
the battery on the unit will charge even when you are using it; the power adaptors that come with notebooks are designed to provide enough power for both the charging circuit and to run the notebook.
and they also monitor the battery levels so overcharging wont be an issue
 
They only allow a small "trickle charge" as it is termed there with a battery protection feature inplace. You will find this more commonly used on a large range of devices that use rechargable batteries these days. But you can still see times when batteries crap out when they are on the charger too often despite the protection there. That is seen more when they are seeing a full charge rather then being charged while a laptop is being used.
 
Also see if a icon is enabled in the bottom right tray, a pic of a power lead when plugged in it should say how much % has charged.
