Does DSL Modem matter

I'm looking to upgrade my network but before I do I would like to know does it matter what kind of modem I have as long as I have the highest speed/best router on the market or will I have to up grade the modem too in order to have higher speed that I just upgraded with my ISP?

Thank you,

Yes, a good or bad modem can make all the difference, but it cannot physically move you closer to the exchange. Your line length to the exchange plays the biggest part in the speeds you will get and stability (to an extent)

I would recommend a Billion 7800NL if you can find one.

Remember, make sure the DSL modem is compatible with your DSL provider.

Isn't it just a matter of choosing the right modulation in the modem setup, and inputting the username/pasword for the adsl service? Eg [email protected] with password. Or does it work differently in the states?

It works differently, you basically have to use the modem they supply or find out what modems your provider actually supports.

You also have to keep in mind that some internet service providers lock on to the mac address of your modem. ( For lack of a better way of explaining it) It has to do with your DHCP lease (provided you don't have a static ip address) if you don't release the lease on your old modem before you try to install the new one you'll probably end up waiting quite a while before the new modem will be able to get an ip address.
