I was wondering this because i upgraded my motherboard once and i didn't have to do anything but when i upgraded to my current board, i had to reformat my harddrive. im going to get a asus a8n5x in a couple weeks and i was wondering if i would have to reformat again? thanks

Depends on your computer. If your 2 motherboards are using the same chipset more than likely you will be OK, as it could be using the same drivers. Sometimes different "versions" of one motherboard use almost identical sets of drivers.

But whether or not you have to, I would do it anyways. It gets rid of any problems that not re-formatting can cause. Alot of times you'll notice decreased perormance due to driver conflicts and your OS trying to pull info that's not there.

Probably yes, or at the very least, you'll have to reactivate it. If you have an OEM copy of Windows, you'll have to get another copy as well. It all depends on the similarities, like 4W4K3 said, if they're similar, the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) will stay the same, and it will boot. If they are radically different, chances are you'll see a blue screen flash right before boot, and you get in a loop of constant reboots. You could put in the disc and run a recovery install to redo the HAL, drivers, and system, but preserve your installed programs, DLL libraries, and documents.

there both Gigabyte but ones a 754 and others a 939.So id say radical. Not really worried about reinstall jus this is a totally new setup.

I had a hard enough time getting my SATA to work as is.

Yes, but the socket doesn't matter, the chipsets are what really matter. Most chipsets are at least slightly modified between the two sockets though.

yea my first board was a nforce2 and my current is a SiS.

I think I'll do that... i just hate putting all my files back where they belong. THanks for all the replies everyone

Yea, then you will have to. The recovery console is a lot easier than backing up files and reformatting, a lot easier.

wait i didnt notice but this wasent my orginal post.LOL but the same title.I think i had mine posted elsewhere thought but it all helps. And SRRY

well heres something you might wanna try,

wwhen you change the boards you will definatly get the BSOD, so what i was going to suggest is repair windows XP, by the CD-ROM that is.

it might just work, well it did with 2000
