Does IBM Aptiva 2176-C6B support USB?

My main system is an IBM Aptiva 2176-C6B, shipped with, and still running, Windows 95. I have a copy of 98 ready to install, pending the answer to this question: Is there any reason why this venerable machine could not support a USB port?

IBM's answer is not terribly clear. Their online document Hardware Interfaces - Aptiva 2134, 2176 has this to say about USB:

Universal Serial Bus. High speed serial bus designed for USB protocol. Note: USB available with System Board Type A-2 only.

Does this mean USB can be added to a Type A-2 board and no other? Or does it mean USB is standard equipment on that board? (My motherboard says TYPE J-1.)

My ultimate goal in this quest is to be able to upload pictures from my new digital camera. The camera documentation says the bundled CD inlcudes drivers that are needed under 98, but not under XP, NT, 2000, etc.

If you have a visible port on the back it should work but USB in Win98 was quirky...make sure its Second Edition and go to Windowsupdate to download critical updates, etc.

If the USB works but you have issues connecting your camera, suggest you invest in a usb card reader for your particular card.

Hope this helps
Happy New Year! :)

The computer has no USB port. I am trying to decide whether to try adding one in the form of a PCI card. I have an open PCI slot but I'm wondering whether this machine is new enough to support USB technology.

Add in USB cards will work, unsupported means that the motherboard does not have USB support built in
