Does overclock shorten lifespan?

I wanted to overclock my motherboard and my rams, but my tech friend recommend me not to because he says it shortens the lifespan. To what degree is it true? and if so shorten it by how long? What do you guys think?

Thanks!

the shortest and sweetest answer to this question is yes, it will shorten the life of a CPU, but before it ever kills it the chip will likely be obsolete. this is assuming you are doing modest overclocking and the temperatures and voltages are at realistic levels. these levels will vary by CPU, so do a little research before jumping into anything.
