i know recovery erases all your data but I'm not user if this recovery partion data will really restore back to factory install. it has 5gb of data so it seems like it should. this computer is running Japanese windows b/c it is a Japanese only model of Toshiba. im fixing it for a Japanese exchange student. my concern is that it will bork on the formating or whatever and i will be stuck with no Japanese windows. i have my copy of English XP but i don't know if use sing the English American xp cd with the added Japanese language support would work with the laptop's keyboard or internal hardware(should work for that stuff) would my XP work with the cd key on the bottom of the laptop?

the laptop got bonk when it was running and windows wont boot. the windows loading slash shows up but loads to a black screen with a mouse. that hapens for the normal boot and safe modes. i haven't tried the windows recovery optin becuase i dont have the japanaese windows cd.

i found a recovery doc on Toshiba's site http://ftp.toshiba.ca/support/TechSupport/TSBs/ALL/-tsb001018.htm
after several hours i got it the Japanese version of the menuing system translated via digital camera and #Japanese on irc.freenode.net to the point where it match the link. so i know what im doing now to recover the hard drive, i just hope it recovers so that the japans es versions of windows works fine.

so has anyone used a manufacture recovery software before with success?

most of the manufacturer recovery dvd's or cd's wipe the hd.

I think "easy" languages are installed by default, durring settup you have to install asian languages or after install in control panel languages and regions.

there is also a languages section in unattended install

try this first on a test machine

the bad part on trying to repair your clients machine is that the registry is probably in japanese so using an english xp cd will not work
