Does the 8600GT have a thing to get a tempature reading?

Now that is original. 
Yeah I would think so too, most new cards these days on them and the 8600GT is not exactly low-end so I think there might be. Why don't you download Ntune and find out? In windows XP the temperature readings was integrated into the driver, so you can see the temperature in the drivers options page, but now in Vista, Nvidia decided to separate it, so now you have to download a separate utility namely Ntune, to gain access to your temperature sensor. You can use third party software of course, but its way easier to just use Ntune.
