does the type of bit client you have determine your speed?

for example, if one bit client is more popular then another one, meaning more people use it, then does that mean that your d/l will be faster?
thanks.
and happy thanksgiving to everyone.

Are you talking about torrents? Or what are you referring to as bit clients.

As far as the program goes, it might slightly affect the downloads as some clients are more effective at gathering the information from a torrent as opposed to others. I've tried many and find the simplest ones the easiest to work with, such as uTorrent which is a standalone and very small client. It also depends on your setting and port connections so if you don't have any of those setup, no matter which client you use, it wont help you much.

If you are talking about something totally different, be more clear about it.

i was talking about programs. because i have bitcomet, and i thought if i got that azareus program, my downloads would be faster since lots of people use it?
thanks

I mostly use uTorrent. It's lightweight, streamlined, and doesn't hog a lot of system resources. I don't think it would really matter what BitTorrent client you use as long as the client conforms to the BitTorrent protocol.

If you running XP SP2, the TCP/IP stack was modified to only allow 10 concurrent half-open connections to cut down on the spreading of worms. However, you can alter the stack with this unsupported patch here. Also, ISPs are getting in the way of torrents these days by throttling the bandwidth used by the torrent protocol. You can get around this by enabling protocol encryption if the BitTorrent client supports it but that might not even work. The other thing is that your WAN link can only support so many connections; you're limited in that sense too.

There are many more tricks and tweaks out there if you search Google but I'm in no way endorsing the downloading of illegal content. This is simply a reply about networking and how the torrent protocol is affected by certain "restrictions".

Got my disclaimer in... :D
