I have this guy:

and use it with my laptop. But now that I'm building a desktop I don't need it as an attachment to my laptop... so what I'm thinking is pulling it out of the external case it came in and fitting it into my new computer case. Can I do that? I know I can do it with hard drives (because I have) and so I just assume that I can do it with this drive. Let me know.

yes. that is what i did, i had a cd burner, and just pulled it out. but keep the main circuit board. you can hook up a harddrive or a other device to it and it will let it run.
