Hi all

I was thinking about getting my own domain name so that it can help me with school. But, How much do they usually cost (pounds), and is it a subscription or a one time payment. Or can you get one for free, because how do sites like this one or youtube etc. host theirs, did they have to buy one?

Anyway what i want to know is am i bound to a contract, will i get a website and email, can i change the website name and email name at any time, and also can i get one for free?

Thanks a lot for you help
Kind regards,
Joe

*Edit* I would also like one where i have to do the coding myself, rather then just choosing from a template and filing in the blanks

You need a registrar such as Go Daddy, eNom, Tucows, etc.

Then you tell them the IP address of your server, either that you are hosting on your own or from a hosting company.

A domain is typically valid for 1 year and costs 10$. Go daddy is the top domain provider. I think Youtube have their own dedicated servers so they are very fast and handle such enormous data at good speed.

I don't think you can change the website name and most hosting sites provide you with email service, but its crappy.

I use to pay 12$ per year for my domain name.

I made a tutorial talking about domain name, link available in my sig :)

Great read Punk :)

JoeRAB, have a look around for web registrars. GoDaddy is by far the most popular, but if you search on Google, you may find other alternatives. Generally if you search for Registrars that are from the UK you may find cheaper prices. For example, crazydomains.com.au have .com domains starting at $7 (I live in Australia). Which is cheaper than a GoDaddy domain currently. I do use both though, as GoDaddy is reliable and I have registered many domains with them and Crazy Domains are good for .com.au domains.

Secondly, find yourself a good host. Free or paid. I tend to find paid hosting is a lot more reliable, but if you aren't too fussed about features, etc then go for free hosting. It's also a good way to test things out before you decide to go paid.

Also, if you haven't already, have a read of Punk's post. It contains all the info you need to get started :)
