i don't like microsoft and so i wanted to move to linux. but for a long time i was afraid of that, because i thought it will be difficult to get all my favourite applications. but about a week ago a decided to try it. i installed kubuntu to my computer and... i was pretty excited. it's very nice a easy to use system. many applications is preinstalled and if you still miss something, you can easily get it with package manager. in the database is about 20 000 applications and libraries and install them is just about a few click on mouse.
since i installed linux, a was in windows twice. once when i tried if it works good after linux installation and second it was by my mistake.

don't be afraid and get linux. it's very nice OS and is for free

yes, but why should i pay for it, when i can get an other OS for free???
and i think some of vista new are borrowed from linux (for example asking for password for some important tasks...)

A lot of games and applications are onlyl available for Windows. For most users Linux would only be good for web browsing, email or using Star Office or some other office suite.

Yeah i know what you mean !. you are really excited now, i know, but trust me when i say a time will come when you will need to go back to windows in order to do some tasks. I use linux but only to play on it nothing serious, i wanted to use it as a work desktop but suse, PcLinux or any distro i tried don't meet the requrements.
I use excel and make access databases and lot,but Open office is not enough, i make 100+ pages of PDF's and OO again is wek......you get the flow right ?...
yeah i also convert vcd to dvd back and forth, and i haven't find a program yet on linux to do that....maybe its the lack of interest or i just don't have the time to look for it

by the way i have come back to windows permanently now, no more suse or what not !!!

^ Depends on the person and needs.

I started using Linux in November 2005, I haven't used Windows at home since then and never find myself thinking that I need to install it again.

hey simon, have you tried UBUNTU ULTIMATE ?..it's an updated ubuntu based on feisty (i think) it has everything pre-installed, you name it. So if you don't have internet to update, no problem cause everything is there, dvd playback,wma,mp3,dvd ripper - author, you name it.
And beryl is installed by default, hey i kinda like the BLACK theme it comes with, really nice you shoudl try it

I just installed ubuntu 6.06 on my pc last night and it ended up taking out my vista so I'm stuck using ubunutu. I see that vista stole some things from ubunutu. Overall linux is pretty good, I just gotta get used to it.

Once you get used to it you will be glad you switched.

Looks good from a clean install, would certainly save some time!

I can't see any mention of 64bit though so it looks like it's 32bit only at the moment?

nice to see it. i'm glad that this thread has persuade somebody... but if you wan't to boot vista again, you need to modify the grub menu... (/boot/grub/menu.lst)

Don't get us started on that! LOL.

See this thread: I was trying to help NJNETSFAN get that going the other night, to very little success. Maybe you have more insight into what we may have been doing wrong.
