Don't buy XFX

Bought an XFX Core Edition HD7870. It runs hot, and the fan rubs against the aluminum enclosure when it's wound out because of said temps.

XFX Support's suggestion?

Rip apart the cooler and reapply thermal paste, and take a pair of pliers to my card to curve the enclosure outwards.

On a two week old video card....

Absolutely rediculous. Never again will I buy XFX, and I urge you to do the same

Wish I'd bought it in a physical store so I could just exchange it. Cursed online computer stores.

I would get in touch with support again, just because that one guy could have been a jackass.

All else fails, your contract is with the store, not XFX, take it back and get a new one.

I wouldn't let one product and one experience tarnish an entire brand when they have thousands of customer service enquiries a day and have sold millions of products. There is a reason they are still going and are, for the most part, held in such high regard

I quite like XFX's support myself. I thought my 6870 had issues, so I sent it to them. They didn't find any issues, but they exchanged the card anyway.

XFX at one time was the best cards out. They just have alot more competition now and alot of manufacturers are willing to make quality card. Makes XFX not stand out like they use it. But support is about as good as any. I will admit if they told me that, I would be pissed.

I was put off by the "item warranted by manufacturer only"

But I kept looking, there's still the regular 30 days thing. So I will get in contact with them to see what I should do.

I am pissed. How is that acceptable? I just dropped a little over $200 for it, the last thing I wanna do is gut it to get it to work properly.

same problem here! My XFX hd7950 gets in the high 70's when I got auto fanspeed enabled.
The fan is also extremely loud after 45-50%... after 70% it stays the same lol.
So I'm getting arctic cooling and oc it anyway.
My XFX hd6870 was perfect in all ways this one isn't lol.

I wish that's all mine got to. Mine gets to 91 or 92 C. Fan speed is damn near 100% at that point I'd say, it's quite loud. After about 10 minutes of that the fan starts to scrape on the aluminum enclosure making an even louder noise. I have a home theater system which can drown it out, but probably not good for me to just let it ride, lol.

There's no way it should be that hot. I'd definitely try to RMA it ASAP

Yep, something definitely wrong, lol.

XFX was good in my experience. Had three 4850's from them. One was faulty, simple enough to get it RMA'd, but they neglected to tell me that the shipping address was outdated. Being from AU shipping to HK with no tracking (it was expensive enough to ship in the first place), it was not received and took SIX MONTHS for it to arrive back on my doorstep from HK post. From there I asked XFX for the correct address, shipped out again, and in two weeks I had a replacement card which worked flawlessly.

Second time some caps failed, most companies would class this as physical damage. XFX didn't, and again it was simple to RMA it and got a new one in two weeks. The only bad thing is that 6 month wait for HK post to return my card... XFX's only fault there was that they didn't tell me the new address, or their website was outdated.

After that, I bought an XFX GTX 460 1GB (yes they exist, I'll link a picture below) which I eventually sold on after no issues. Previously I had a Palit card which was complete junk and they outright refused to RMA it.

XFX customer support was great the one time I dealt with them. Let me replace a failed 8800GT (back when they were still top of the line cards) even though I did not have the receipt.

Aastii is totally right, sometimes you just get a bad representative and you shouldn't write off the whole company because of a single experience. If you call again make sure to mention that the last guy gave you instructions that (I'm pretty sure) would void the warranty.

Yeah I know, I was just really pissed off when they told me that which started this thread, lol. I'm still exchanging it for another XFX, just pissed off they told me to do something so asinine. Although it was two different representatives that wanted me to rip my card apart.. Apparently with the online service you don't get the same guy every reply.
