don't know password

I got a pretty nice pc from a friend, it was his brother in law who passed away, it has Windows 7 Home Premium, I finally got it to boot but it is password protected which who knows what that is, is there a way around this, I do have the hirems boot cd with the other numerous programs here, thanks
 
You should just reinstall windows fresh. Otherwise hirens has the software to remove the password.
 
I do not have a windows 7 disk, that would be my preference, I have XP but you cannot go backwards to an earlier OS/ system I believe
 
If you have a product key....may be on side of PC if prebuilt. You can download an ISO of Win 7 on anther PC and use it to do fresh install.
 
I went to the Microsoft site for the download and gave them the product key for the down computer and it would not go, should I have used the product key for the one I'm downloading onto?
 
Give the product key for the computer that you will be doing the fresh install on. ISO is simple, burn it, and set boot to the CD drive and you are good to go.
 
I'm downloading now onto a 4gb flash drive, I was not asked for a key like the microsoft site asked, I thought the key entry takes place quite a bit after I put the install in. There was nothing on the key info on the case that said 32 or 64 bit, so i chose 64. When the download is finished I have another process to make the flash drive able to download to the hard drive....right?
 
The same keys work between 32 and 64 bit variants.

You'll need the key once installing the OS, but for Windows 7 you could also just hit next when it's blank to leave it in a trial activation period and insert the key once you're done installing too.
 
Does the computer have a cd drive? If so burn the iso to a cd and install that way, so much easier.
 
well after hours of trial and error I can make a bootable flash drive, trouble is the two versions I downloaded 64 bit Home Premium and 32 bit Ultimate don't work. I have a somewhat newer computer that I'm running windows 7 64 bit and the hard drives with the new downloads run fine on it, but not the older computer, apparently this older computer will run 32 bit Home Premium at best and that is probably what the product key is referencing. It seems a download site called Digital River is suggested but that no longer exists
 
Is it a store bought computer or a custom build machine? If store bought, give make and model number.
 
I just got off the line with Microsoft, the product key cannot be verified because it is a Compaq (though there is a "HP" above the product key#), at this point I wish the password reset on Hirems boot disk programs worked like it said it did. Although there is a slight chance Compag can help me, otherwise I have to buy a new OS, or i suppose I can put XP on it, I do appreciate your help
 
What is the model number of the machine? I need to find out what OS was originally shipped on the machine.
 
As for the OS the COA tag says Windows 7 Home Premium, it is a Compaq with a Athlon 2.7 ghz processor, probably quite old by now as it is DDR2 memory and no usb boot in bios
