Download and redirecting problems

I hope this is in the right forum.
Okay, so I recently had to do a repair install on my Windows XP. It's working now, more or less, but I'm still having a few problems.

One, I should have Windows service pack 3, but I'm back to 2. I tried downloading service pack 3, but it keeps giving me a page load error, despite a good connection. My only guess is that it won't work on Firefox, and I no longer have Internet Explorer.

So I went to download IE 8 and I can, but it keeps freezing about halfway through the installation and I have to abort it.

Another problem I'm having is that I keep getting redirected to random (and most likely scam) sites whenever I don't type in the address myself. Like, if I search something in Google and click the link from there, it takes me somewhere else. I also keep getting occasional pop-ups, even though my pop-up blocker is on. My browser is Firefox, version 3 I think, and I never had these problems before the repair install, so I'm thinking there's something missing in my security.

Any help would be much appreciated. <3

You may be forced to do a fresh install of windows but we'll see. How come you don't have IE anymore? As technically you really can't remove it from your machine and you'll only cause issues if you try doing so. You definately have a browser hijacker so lets start here and we'll see whats going on.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Thanks for your help. I ran the Anti-Maleware, but I'm at school right now, so I'll post the log later. I still need to run Hijackthis.

I *think* removed IE, because I never used it after getting Firefox. All I can find of it is a shortcut icon, and it doesn't bring it up.

I'm also having more problems: sometimes programs won't open, or takes a long time; I've often had to shut my computer down manually because it's either taking too long or freezing up; and I keep getting this error message whenever I first start it up. It says Genericwin Host 32 (if I remember right) isn't responding and has to be shut down. I have no idea what that is. >>; Do you think these issues are related? If not, should I start another thread? (I'm guessing it would go under software?)

Best thing to do is keep this as one thread, we can deal with it more efficiently that way. Please follow all of Johnb35's steps and post the requested logs. And as Johnb35 also said earlier, you really cant uninstall IE; its an integral part of the operating system.

Ah. I wonder I what I did to it then. >>;
