Download problems

OK..About a week & a half ago, I installed an FTP program (Smart FTP) off of Download.com. Didn't like it all that much & uninstalled it. Ever since then, when I try to download any file off of the internet it gets to 99% & then the download box disappears, never downloading the file to my PC. I have tried turning off my antivirus program, changing settings in IE to no avail. I'm at my wits end! I'm convinced that the FTP program I had installed caused this & changed a setting somewhere on my PC & left them behind after I uninstalled the program. My OS in Win XP SP2. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
 
go to your local library and take a diskette and copy firefox or any other computer place library is free heh
 
Still no luck solving this problem..I'm goin' nuts! If any newbies who have recently joined the forum could offer some insight, that would be appreciated. If not, I may just end up reformatting. (I'm thinking the fix is very simple though). Thanks again guys!
 
do you have AIM? if so, you could ask one of your friends to download firefox and send it to you. if not, you probably have MSN because it comes with windows. Set up an account if you dont have one and do the same thing.
