Downloading games from Steam

I'm considering downloading a game from Steam. I haven't used it before but hopefully you have. Will I recieve it in form of a single file so that I can store it somehow? And will I be able to install it in x years when Steam may be no more without getting into trouble with activation etc?

When you purchase and download games from steam they are locked to your account. You can't actually 'back them up' or anythin, but you can always redownload them in the future if you get a new pc or anything like that. I've bought several from steam without issue so I recomend them!

you can back it up.

You buy the game, that is bound to your account, then you can install it, uninstall it, mod the files, whatever, it is just a base for accessing the games and that, it is all stored on your system.

If you want to back up the game files you can, just right click the game in your games list and click backup game files... That will let you back it up to your hard drive, another hard drive, and external drive, a USB device, DVD, CD whatever and it will backup the game files and saves.

I'd imagine steam and all of its stuff will always be there. If Valve goes out of business (the people that develop and run steam) then you will still be able to get to your account and steam and that

You learn something every day! I was never aware you could do back them up. Does it let you install it later without steam? Or is it just so you don't have to wait to download it again at a later time?

That's good. I'm thinking of getting Empire Total War through Steam, and I've heard others tell me that you actually need to be connected to Steam in order to play online. Wonder how that will work if they go out of business...

you don't have to download it again.

Where the game is you save it in x amount of files depending on size.

Say you had an 8GB game and you wanted to burn them to DVDs to back it up, DVDs are 4.9GB i think, so it would make 2. If you want to reinstall it or you have to because of virus, corruption whatever, you would open the first one (they are numbered), and it will reinstall it onto your system in your steamapps folder.

Siberian, you do have to be online to play online on Valve games, but the others work regardless.

Lets say you bought CoD4 you can open steam in offline mode, open and play CoD and because Valve don't own the servers or the master server, it wouldn't matter, it would connect to the IW master server and then to whichever server you want.

It is like that with every game
