Downloading Linux

I have an extra PC that I use just for email at this time. It's a WIN98 system. I'd like to download Linux just for fun and see what it's like. Once I download it, is it OK to uninstall WIN98? Also, would I have to reset up my internet access and any other programs I have installed?

Thanks

yeah , linux will give you the choice to either fully erase the disk (assuming you are not oing to use win98 anymore)

not really if your router/modem give's out dhcp, no probs, you're good to go.

and oh, you need to give us your specs first !

cheers!

What is dhcp and what kind of specs are you looking for? My pc has 96 megs ram and a 7 gig hd. Anything else? If I don't like it, I can always reinstall win98.

You could throw that computer out the window and get a real 1? and you dont need to reinstall windows, There is something call Duel booting. It lets you have to OS ( operating systems ). And with a 7gb HD i dont no if u can fit to OS systems on, But maby the old ones are small. And about your DHCP question theres always google

I do have a couple "real" computers. However, this old one still works like new so it would be stupid to throw it out. I have a lot of programs on it and still only use half the hd. Also, I still prefer win98 to XP. Basically, I now just use it for email. Actually, my wife does. When I'm on my laptop and she wants to check her email, I'll fire that one up for her.

Hey please just ignore what our mate Blue Plum writes. It is very rare when he actually helps some1. Dual booting however is a good idea. Think about it.

Dual Booting...dual. You're not fighting the damn thing. Not every OS needs gigabytes of HDD space. Win 98 ran perfect with >750MB. Several Linux Distros out there will make even that look like a system hog.

Could you please just stop posting or keep all your comments limited to the Off-Topic area? I have not seen you make one post yet that actually assisted someone with their problem. Your response are often derogatory and/or make zero sense. If you want to be a jerk, fine, but be a jerk on another Forum and let those of us who both can and want to help others here do so without having to sift through the crap you post.

To the OP:

Depending on the Linux Distro you install, you'll have an option to manually partition your HDD before installing. You can either re-size Win98 (which was the last version of Windows I truly liked:)) and install Linux alongside it, or wipe the entire HDD clean and install just Linux. As far as resetting up your internet access, do you mean doing it on Linux or doing it on Win98 after Linux is installed? Dial-up? -High-speed? During the Linux install, it should detect hardware and install appropriate drivers. You'll need to set up your individual email accounts, but if you don't know that info, you can get some help from your ISP.
