downloading speed

I have an Apple computer and I get a beach ball all the time when trying
to download. Is this because other people in my area are on the computer and
slowing it down. ( I have a cable modem )

Beach Ball? Can you please elaborate? Usually on a cable connection there is no slowness when others are on.

What are you trying to download? Can you give us what model your Mac is and what version of OSX you are using?
