drive wont detect dvd-r

Nero or any other program wont detecect a blank DVD-R so i can burn a dvd off the computer onto it, its a NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A cd rom drive it didnt come with the computer tho and i dont have a installation disk but the computer already detected it and installed it its plays cd's and dvd's, detects blank cd-r cds but not DVD-R does anyone know what the problem might be it would be much appreshiated thx
 
well almost any disc burner you buy these days is a +/- drive, you may have an older drive that is only + or -
 
ok thats the problem then i have downloaded over 10 diffrent burning programs tired flashing the drivw with firmware tried changing the jumper on the back even tho i knew that didnt have anything to do with it but i was trying everything i feel like a ****ing retart im so pissed sry for the language
