Driver Error?

I have seen that message a good number of times while running HL2 or another game. Generally a refresh or update of video or sound drivers will see that stop. Another thing to try in case a system file was somehow the problem file is to run "sfc /scannow" at the Run prompt. Every one in awhile one of those sees a glitch.

Another item that can trip you up at times is leftovers in the system registry from something you may have removed some time back. A free cleaner can go right on and clean up a few things with little trouble. RegCleaner can found at http://www.download.com/RegClean/3000-2094_4-881470.html?tag=pdp_prod

If you still see this problem after trying these out you use the msconfig utility that comes along with Windows to reduce the number of things that startup along with Windows. If something loading with Windows is now seeing a problem this will help find out which one it is. Simply type msconfig at the Run prompt and press enter to open that screen up and go to the last tab on the right for the startup group. Uncheck everything there temporarily to see if the problem remains. If that still doesn't help you may have a hardware fault developing.

Wellll....

SFC has nothing to do with it and won't solve anything. It's not a corrupt file.

The registry? Not likely.

msconfig? Try it if you get bored.

The thing with those nVIDIA drivers is that they are kinda buggy. I don't think nVIDIA knows how to write a good kit. I would try a driver rollback, because each revision of the kit they fix one thing up to bugger up something else.

Try rolling back a couple of different revisions and see if any fix the problem. There's a rollback function in Windows in the driver properties.

If that doesn't work, try booting your computer with last known good configuration. See if that doesn't work out the quirk. There's a chance it might.

There's a possibility (I would say slight at this point until I have more info to work with), that the card is screwing up. I can easily see it happening. You will know for sure if you swap the card out and the problem goes away.

Also, check your voltages. Drooping voltages can cause erratic problems.

BUNK! Recently when seeing a few good burns with BurnOn the system started acting flaky for no apparent reason. Suddenly BurnOn became worthless. Alright give "sfc /scannow" a run and "Presto" everything suddenly back to normal. And it isn't always video drivers that can gum up the works as was pointed out earlier. Sound drivers for a card or onboard can see some problems at times.

You and your ****ing SFC...

member: Hi, my computer won't turn on. What's wrong?
PC Eye: Run sfc /scannow. That will fix you right up. And did I tell you about my x1300 VGA?

Geez.

Well, whatever. I don't care. If you're wrong you're going to be the one to look like a bonehead, so I'm not going to argue with you. However I will say that Windows has a fantastic way of telling you when a file is inaccessible because it's missing or corrupt. But whatever. Who knows. You might get lucky for once and it might actually work. Maybe Microsoft is smoking the same pot I am. Besides, you'll end up telling me about your Seagate or something else I don't give a damn about. lol.

Ummm. When I talk about pot it's not to be taken literally. Hmmm? I mean, I do smoke it like once every three months or something stupid like that, but it's rare. When I use the reference I use it to make a point. I can't help but wonder what life is like walking through it with blinders on (you do know what blinders are, right?).

I'm already aware that you were making a point. But I just had to let you fall into this one! :P

On a more serious note I don't seem to have the "blinders" that most others do. But that would be for another thread on another part of the forum if discussed at all.

Yeah.. That was a real trap... Impressive.

HAI EVERYBODY!!! I SMOKE POT FOUR TIMES A YEAR AND I STILL KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!!! Everybody jump me now.

Yup. You got me. I guess I'll go crawl under my desk now and wait for my wife to bring me table scraps and eat the M&Ms that roll on to the floor.

Geez pC eYe. You'd think you could do better than that. Did you honestly think I care that anyone knows that I puff the occasional reefer? Do you think anyone else cares? If they get help with their PC or whatever problems they might have in their own life, if I can make them smile, if I can make them laugh, if I can make a difference, do you really think they'll give a shit?

Man, Lukas singing Bitter Sweet Symphony is just killer. Holy crap.

Both of you, stay on the topic of the thread, and less of the personal comments, please. It's not the first time you two have overshadowed someone's problem with your arguments, and it doesn't help one bit.
