I've had good service DSL service from Centurytel for about 1 year. The most I can get in my area is 6.0.
I know by todays standards, 6 is very slow, but we are both retired and have plenty of time on our hands.
For the first 6 months, everytime I checked with speedtest.net the DSL was at 6.4 or down to 5.98. Perfect as far as I was concerned.
But the last 6 months the speed is anywhere from .5 to 5.0, and never a 6.0.
I have bought three DSL modems this year to try to get a steady speed, but all have been failing, one within 24 hours down to a 1.0.
The first DSL modems was a NETGEAR modem/router, from Bestbuy, 4.97 speed outof the box, the next day it was 1.0 I tok it back and bought a Actiontek modem router, it failed within a week down to 1.0.
The third was just a simple modem from Netgear and it just dropped to less than 1. it was good for three days.
I took a laptop to the telephone network interface and unplugged everything else and the best I could get is a 4.97 speed.
I am an old telephone man with 33 years of POTS service. The telephone line is clear, no static or noise or humming on the line.
When the speed drops I unplug the modem power for 30 seconds and then I have 4.97 again.
My next call is to Centurytel to complain about the speed.
Anyione here got any ideas about the loss of speed.
