DSL keeps dropping

I've had good service DSL service from Centurytel for about 1 year. The most I can get in my area is 6.0.
I know by todays standards, 6 is very slow, but we are both retired and have plenty of time on our hands.

For the first 6 months, everytime I checked with speedtest.net the DSL was at 6.4 or down to 5.98. Perfect as far as I was concerned.

But the last 6 months the speed is anywhere from .5 to 5.0, and never a 6.0.

I have bought three DSL modems this year to try to get a steady speed, but all have been failing, one within 24 hours down to a 1.0.

The first DSL modems was a NETGEAR modem/router, from Bestbuy, 4.97 speed outof the box, the next day it was 1.0 I tok it back and bought a Actiontek modem router, it failed within a week down to 1.0.
The third was just a simple modem from Netgear and it just dropped to less than 1. it was good for three days.

I took a laptop to the telephone network interface and unplugged everything else and the best I could get is a 4.97 speed.

I am an old telephone man with 33 years of POTS service. The telephone line is clear, no static or noise or humming on the line.

When the speed drops I unplug the modem power for 30 seconds and then I have 4.97 again.

My next call is to Centurytel to complain about the speed.

Anyione here got any ideas about the loss of speed.

What kind of metrics do you get as far as errors on the DSL interface?

Usually you can log into the router/modem and see, they should look something like:

If you have intermittent noise the interface may be renegotiating with the DSLAM at a lower rate continually.

Centurytel or Centurylink as it is called today, has created the problem of getting DSL complaints from all it's DSL customers.

Centurylink knows how to fix the extremely slow DSL internet speeds that's happening now, but they are telling their customers it's because too many customers are using the internet at the same time. WHAT!

Too many customers is a bad thing at Centurykink.

Upgrade is the answer. Upgrade the equipment NOW, increase the Bandwith NOW, replace the outdated equipment NOW, to catch up with the rest of the world.

I thought Centurylink was going to be a Communications giant when I first moved into their area to live because service was great in the beginning, now I wish I had AT&T back.
