DSL modem slows down to a crawl, why?

We have a DSL 1.5 and it does do everything we need it to do, but every 5-6 days I have to unplug it, let it set a minute, and plug it back in.

Just now I had to unplug it again... the speed was not 1.5, it was down to .25 on the download.

After plugging it back in the speed it back up to 1.58, and the upload is .27 which is normal.

Why does the modem slow down to a crawl? I have a 60mm cooling fan on it but it still slows down and I have to unplg it.

This happening is normal but not as often as you have to do it. I would say once or twice a year is normal for most. How old is the modem? It may be time for a replacement.
