this goes with the question i asked a week ago. i have verizon dsl and i live about 1.5 miles away from verizon (my isp), both still in the city. now, i know sometimes distance away from the isp for dsl can matter. i just ordered a 3mb/768k line and i was wondering off of that information if anybody could guess what my actual download speed will be.

It depends on what server you are downloading from. BTW, mikekelly I have a 1.5mbps dsl line and I am getting faster speeds than that on some servers.

You are going to see speeds of around 2.4mb! My Mom has sbc 3.0mb and lives about the same distance and thats what she gets!

PS: your upload speed will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 450k!

There are to many factors to put an average on this distance.. You have the wiring of the distanc eof 1.6 miles.. Your isp could be crap, and MANY other things. If you were closer you would be getting faster speeds.. How fast is purely a guess..

1.6 miles with 3.0mb dsl you are going to be about 2.4mb :D trust me

Im not here to argue with people who have no idea what they are talking about. You cant give ratios to dsl speed:distance..

at 1/4 mile he will always have 3.0mb and at 1.0 mile he will have 1.5mb and at 3 mile he will have... Whatever..

In city one you could have crappy wiring and old equipment... In the next city you could have brand new equipment and optical wires... If a compnay offers you a 3.0 mb connection, thats a BEST SPEED connection. Not a constant speed connection. In real life you should (and probably wont) receive the speed they give you. There is no way that 2.5mb is the average for everybody who is 1.6 miles from the CO..

If you can read a chart, look at this...

Many types of DSL, many types of wires.. many types of distances... In other words your theory is shot to shit.

Crapy wire will only effect the speed if it is generating noise in the line in which case your phone provider will have to fix it and as far as different types of dsl both verizon and sbc use pppoe, if you dont see speeds of at least 2.4mb call your isp and phone company and have them check the wires!

Post speed when your all hooked up (2.4MB) will bet the farm on it!
